Why GREEN LANTERN (2011) is fundamentally a bad film. (Long read)

It has a lot in common with the animated movie that came out about a
year earlier. It has a lot of the same story.

The Bond specific bit:

#8) Martin Campbell as the director.
Campbell is a hard director to peg. He’s directed some hits,
GoldenEye, The Mask of Zorro, and most notably, Casino Royale. But
he’s also directed some big misses such as, Vertical Limit, Beyond
Borders, The Legend of Zorro, and most notably, the Mel Gibson
funfest, Edge of Darkness. It’s not that great of a track record. The
biggest shining star is Casino Royale. But James Bond is a whole
different beast than Green Lantern. There’s literally dozens of
better, more suited directors such as - Bryan Singer (X2), Danny Boyle
(Sunshine), Gore Verbinski (PotC Trilogy), Joe Carnahan (Smokin’
Aces), Robert Zemeckis (Beowulf), David Slade (30 Days of Night), Cary
Fukanaga (Sin Nombre), JJ Abrams (Star Trek), Paul Verhoeven (Total
Recall), Matthew Vaughn (Stardust), David Lynch (Lost Highway), Joss
Whedon (Serenity), Zack Snyder (300), Roger Avary (The Rules of
Attraction), Frank Darabont (The Mist), David Cronenberg (Eastern
Promises), Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum); hell, even Kevin
Smith is a better choice because he at least understands the basic
material. And those are just a few, more fitting and if not at least,
interesting choices. Hiring Martin Campbell was a safe and boring
decision. It’s not going to bring you amazing results, but there’s a
chance you’ll get a solid movie. Granted, it’s better than having Bret
Ratner direct an X-Men movie or Tim fucking Story direct Fantastic
Four. (Which is a whole other rant.)
